Gladstone School District
Starting in 2014, our Gladstone Teaching Preschool is an inclusive classroom run as a collaboration between Clackamas Education Service District, Gladstone School District, and Teaching Preschool Partners. We facilitate growth and change in classroom practice, and work to align our approaches with inclusion in mind.
Gladstone Teaching Preschool
Children are eligible to enroll in Gladstone Teaching Preschool if they live in Gladstone and have early intervention or special education needs in multiple domains, and/or if their families are enrolled in Oregon’s Preschool Promise program. Gladstone Teaching Preschool (GTP) is a collaboration between Clackamas Education Service District, Gladstone School District, and Teaching Preschool Partners. The two preschool classrooms are located in the Gladstone Center for Children and Families in Gladstone, Oregon—a working class, small town, population 11,500, just south of Portland, Oregon. GTP opened in April, 2014 and will begin its ninth year of operation in fall of 2023.
Each GTP classroom is staffed by a teacher, a teaching assistant, and a number of ESD consultants. The teacher is licensed by the state of Oregon and has experience with inquiry-based approaches to learning through the arts and sciences with young children. The teaching assistants have worked in the field for a number of years with specific experience working in special education settings. GTP Program staff receive professional development support through Teaching Preschool Partners.
Alignment Into the Early Grades in the Gladstone School District
In Fall 2017, Teaching Preschool Partners and the Gladstone Teaching Preschool began a pilot with one of the kindergarten classrooms housed in the Gladstone Family Center. The pilot explored integration of an Inquiry curriculum structure, Story Workshop, into the kindergarten writing program. In 2018-19, the partnership expanded to a second Kindergarten classroom.
